Scientific name: Benincasa hispida
Common names: Ash Gourd, Winter Melon, Wax Gourd, White Gourd, Winter Gourd, Chinese Wax Gourd, Petha Kaddu.

Description:
Asian Oblong is a vigorous, warm-season ash gourd variety producing large, elongated fruits. The fruits are light green when young and develop a distinctive whitish, waxy coating as they mature. Individual fruits can reach around 20 lb (9 kg) or more, depending on growing conditions. The crisp white flesh is mild in flavor and widely used in curries, soups, stews, and sweets such as petha. The waxy coating also gives mature fruits excellent storage life.

Germination & growing tips:

  • Sow depth: 1–2 cm
  • Germination temperature: 25–35°C
  •  Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Provide a strong trellis or plenty of ground space—the vines are vigorous.
  •  Transplant after seedlings develop 2–3 true leaves.
  • Maturity: approximately 80–95 days, depending on conditions
