Ochroma pyramidale is a very fast-growing tropical tree native to Central and South America. It is famous for producing balsa wood, one of the lightest commercial woods in the world. The tree can grow 20–30 meters tall in just a few years and produces large heart-shaped leaves and attractive creamy-white flowers that attract bats and insects for pollination.

Germination tips:

  • Scarify the seeds lightly with sandpaper or soak them in hot (not boiling) water for 12–24 hours.
  • Sow in a well-draining seed-starting mix, about 2–3 mm deep.
  • Maintain a temperature of 25–30°C.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Germination usually occurs in 7–30 days under warm conditions.
  • Provide bright light after germination and protect young seedlings from frost, as they are highly tropical.
