Short description:
Sesbania sesban is a fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing small tree or shrub native to Africa and South Asia. It typically grows 3–8 meters tall and is widely cultivated for fodder, green manure, fuelwood, erosion control, and soil improvement. It bears attractive yellow flowers with purple or reddish markings and produces long, slender seed pods.

Germination tips:

  • Scarify the hard seed coat with sandpaper or soak the seeds in hot (not boiling) water, then leave them to soak for 12–24 hours.
  • Sow 1–2 cm deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Maintain a temperature of 25–35°C.
  • Keep the soil lightly moist until germination.
  • Germination usually occurs within 5–14 days.
  • Grow seedlings in full sun and transplant while young, as they establish quickly and develop deep roots.
